Residents in parts of western Limassol say they have been dealing with a persistent sewage-like smell during the night, with complaints continuing as locals seek an explanation for the source.
According to residents, the odor has been particularly noticeable from the Polemidia area and further down toward the western parts of the city. One resident said the smell has been present for about a month and is mainly detected from nighttime through the early morning.
The issue has also prompted questions about water flowing through the Garyllis River. Photos and videos shared online show a section of the river near the linear park where water is flowing despite other parts of the riverbed being dry.
A resident who shared the material called on the Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA Limassol) to investigate the source of the water.
Some residents have suggested that the flow could be connected to treated wastewater. However, the source of the discharge has not been established in the information available.
Residents have also pointed to a significant mosquito problem in the area. The concern is particularly relevant because several schools are located nearby, according to comments accompanying the social media post.
The complaints come as residents continue to seek clearer information about the source of both the odor and the water flow. One resident also disputed suggestions that the smell was coming from the Vati landfill area, saying the landfill itself does not have a sewage-like odor.
The latest reports have renewed calls for the relevant authorities to investigate the situation and clarify what is causing the nighttime odors and where the water entering the Garyllis River is coming from.
