Riyadh airport shuts after attack, disrupting flights

Travelers from Cyprus heading to the Saudi capital should check their bookings as airlines cancel and divert services.

Saudi Arabia’s main airport in Riyadh suspended operations Saturday after an attack left several people injured, disrupting flights and forcing travelers to reconsider their plans.

The U.S. and British embassies have also warned their citizens to avoid Riyadh airport amid the continuing threat of attacks, Reuters reported.

The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority said King Khalid International Airport would remain closed while officials assessed the damage and checked that its facilities were safe. The number of people injured was still being determined, according to Reuters.

Passengers were evacuated from parts of the airport after an explosion, with more than a dozen ambulances seen heading to the scene. Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways canceled multiple services between their hubs and Riyadh, with some cancellations extending into Monday. The airport urged passengers to contact their airlines and confirm their flight status before traveling there.

For travelers leaving Cyprus, the immediate concern is any booking that includes Riyadh, whether as a destination or a connecting stop. Passengers should check every leg of their journey and contact their airline or travel agent about alternative arrangements if a service has been canceled.

The reports reviewed do not establish whether any direct Cyprus–Riyadh service has been affected.

The latest attack comes amid escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group, which has targeted the airport in earlier strikes. No group had claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack in the Reuters update reviewed.
