A 37-year-old driver was arrested after allegedly striking a road worker on the Paphos–Limassol motorway on Thursday morning, leaving the 24-year-old victim fighting for his life in hospital.

Police said the incident occurred at around 9.40am near Sotira on the stretch of motorway leading toward Limassol. The young man had been part of a work crew carrying out maintenance operations on the highway when he was hit by a passing vehicle under circumstances still being examined by investigators.

After colliding with the worker, the car crashed into a large illuminated warning arrow positioned at the worksite before coming to a halt.

Emergency services transported the injured worker to Limassol General Hospital, where doctors determined he had sustained multiple serious injuries. Medical staff described his condition as extremely critical.

Authorities said the 37-year-old driver underwent a preliminary drug test, which produced a positive result. He was later taken into custody under a court-issued warrant.

The investigation is being handled by Limassol Traffic Police together with officers from the Episkopi police station.
