A man who went for a run in Limassol was hospitalized after being bitten by a venomous snake and later found unconscious, authorities said.
Civil Defense said the runner, identified as Menelaos Stavrinides, had been missing for several hours before rescuers located him. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors confirmed he had been bitten by a snake and was also suffering from heatstroke.
“After several harrowing hours, our compatriot was located by a rescue team in critical condition due to a snake bite and heatstroke,” Civil Defense said in a statement, adding that Stavrinides’ condition had initially been unknown.
Officials urged the public to exercise caution in areas with dense vegetation, noting that Cyprus is home to three venomous snake species, one of which poses a serious danger to humans.
Civil Defense wished Stavrinides a speedy recovery.
