Paphos schools evacuate after new bomb threats

Authorities zero-in on a student after two new bomb threats were phoned in prompting school evacuations

Newsroom

Two schools in Paphos received bomb threats on Thursday morning, with police responding according to protocol days after a handful of prank calls in other schools and cities.

According to police, two bomb threats were called in around 10:00am at two different middle schools in Paphos, Nikolaidio and Theoskepastis.

A male student described as possibly involved was scheduled to talk with investigators in the afternoon, in the presence of his parents

Law enforcement officers as well as members of the bomb squad rushed to the schools, where a complete evacuation had been ordered.

Kykkos high school, which is close to Nikolaidio, was also evacuated while thorough searches were said to be ongoing.

A male student, who is considered a person of interest, was scheduled to talk with investigators in the afternoon, in the presence of his parents or legal guardians, according to media reports.

Several other schools were evacuated last week following similar phone calls that later turned out to be hoaxes. And two weeks ago, multiple evacuations had been ordered in two shopping malls, a casino, and a flight that was just about ready to take off in Larnaca.

This story has been updated with information about a student possibly behind Thursday's phone call
