Tensions are high at the Agios Georgios Senior Citizens' Home in Larnaca following a disturbing incident involving an alleged attempted rape by a migrant. A resident of the home spoke out on state television, describing the incident in which a Syrian migrant reportedly tried to assault a young girl behind a washing machine at knifepoint. The resident also mentioned that since the arrival of migrants in the facility, there have been frequent disturbances that have made life difficult for the elderly residents.
Residents echoed similar complaints, saying they can no longer sleep at night due to loud noise and alleged drug use in the area. Frustrated, they have called on the authorities to take immediate action, asking for the removal of the unaccompanied minors from the facility. The situation has sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of both the elderly residents and the migrants themselves.
In response to the uproar, the Social Welfare Services of Cyprus issued a statement acknowledging the complaints. The ministry confirmed that the relocation of the unaccompanied minors had already been planned before the incident. According to the statement, moving the minors to alternative facilities is already underway and expected to be completed within a few days.
The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing challenges of managing migrant accommodations in Cyprus, particularly in sensitive environments like senior citizens' homes. Local authorities are under pressure to resolve the issue promptly and ensure the safety of all parties involved.
