Basketball fans in Cyprus are in for a historic treat. For the first time, the Cypriot national team will compete in the FIBA EuroBasket, and the country’s courts will host a parade of global stars, including seven NBA players.
From August 28 to September 4, the Spiros Kyprianou Athletic Center in Limassol will be the stage for top-tier European competition, featuring powerhouse teams like Greece, Spain, Italy, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, all bringing at least one NBA-caliber player.
Leading the lineup is Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBA champion, MVP, and Finals standout known worldwide as the “Greek Freak.” His presence alone guarantees a packed arena as fans flock to see one of basketball’s modern icons in action.
Italy will be represented by Simone Fontecchio of the Miami Heat, while Bosnia boasts towering center Jusuf Nurkić from the Utah Jazz. Spain brings Santi Aldama (Memphis Grizzlies) and Eli Ndiaye (Atlanta Hawks), and Georgia features Goga Bitadze (Orlando Magic) and Sandro Mamukelashvili (Toronto Raptors), who previously played alongside Giannis in Milwaukee.
“These are the kinds of players that inspire every young basketball fan,” said a spokesperson for the Cyprus Basketball Federation. “Having NBA stars right here in Limassol is a dream come true for our team and for fans across the country.”
