Severe weather hits Limassol, floods and landslides reported

Rain, strong winds, and possible snow ahead for the weekend, as the island braces for more unsettled weather.

Newsroom

Intense weather conditions have hit the Limassol District since last night, causing significant disruptions. Heavy rainfall has led to flooding, particularly in areas like Parekklisia, where water has accumulated on the road surfaces. Additionally, there have been reports of landslides in Platres and surrounding roads, forcing the closure of one lane near Alasia village. Authorities are working to manage the situation, but motorists are urged to exercise caution in affected areas.

Weather Forecast: A Weekend of Change

Despite the serious start to the weekend, the weather ahead is set to offer some relief. A weak low-pressure system will affect the island today, bringing a mix of clouds and occasional showers. Expect the rain to start along the coast and spread inland, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Some hail is also expected to accompany these storms. Winds will be moderate, ranging from light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, though they could increase during storms. The sea will remain calm, with a slight chop in some areas. Temperatures will peak around 24°C inland and along the coast, while the higher mountains will see cooler temperatures around 14°C.

Tonight, partly cloudy skies will prevail, with isolated showers likely along the northern coast. As the night progresses, mist or fog may form in the interior and eastern parts of the island. Winds will be light at 3 Beaufort, mainly from the northwest to northeast, with slightly stronger winds on the northern coast. Temperatures will drop to around 13°C inland, 16°C on the coast, and a chilly 8°C in the mountains.

Weekend Outlook: A Mixed Bag of Weather

Looking ahead to Saturday, cloud cover will increase, bringing more isolated showers. From late Saturday night into Sunday morning, expect localized showers, beginning in the west and north, with snow possible in the higher mountains. Winds will pick up significantly, becoming very strong to gusty. Sunday afternoon and evening will see further showers, with snow likely in the higher and, in some areas, lower mountains.

Temperatures will remain steady on Saturday but will drop sharply on Sunday, continuing to stay below seasonal averages through Monday. So, while the weather will be a bit unsettled over the weekend, it's also the perfect excuse to enjoy a cozy indoor day or take a scenic winter walk in the mountains! Just be sure to keep an umbrella handy.
