The British High Commissioner Designate to Cyprus, Michael Tatham, and US Ambassador Julie Fisher underscored Cyprus’ importance in the region during the Economist’s 20th Annual Cyprus Summit on Thursday. Both envoys praised the country’s proactive regional contributions, including its recent humanitarian and diplomatic efforts.
Tatham, just four days into his role, highlighted the UK’s strong relationship with Cyprus, describing it as a partnership built on mutual respect and collaboration. He mentioned his “productive meeting” with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in London last month, emphasizing how much the UK values Cyprus’ role in fostering stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
On the long-standing Cyprus problem, Tatham reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting a resolution. As a guarantor power, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and the UNSC’s penholder on Cyprus, Tatham said the UK has a “forward-looking approach” and supports UN-led diplomacy. “This issue has remained unresolved for far too long,” he said, stressing the need for renewed efforts.
Regarding UK-EU relations, Tatham clarified that the new UK government views Brexit as final and is focused on improving collaboration with Brussels, particularly on areas where the withdrawal agreement can benefit both parties.
US Ambassador Fisher commended Cyprus for its key contributions during regional crises. She specifically noted its role in facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza through a maritime corridor and assisting in the evacuation of foreign nationals during crises such as the Sudan conflict 18 months ago.
“Cyprus is an essential part of the regional response,” Fisher said, highlighting the strong cooperation between Cyprus and the US in crisis planning. She also applauded the “incredible commitment” of President Christodoulides and his team in addressing regional challenges.
Fisher referenced the historic meeting between President Christodoulides and US President Joe Biden at the White House, the first for a Cypriot leader in 28 years. She noted Biden’s gratitude for Cyprus’ contributions to regional stability and international cooperation.
Both envoys emphasized Cyprus’ vital position as a bridge between Europe, the Middle East, and the broader region. Fisher stressed the importance of transatlantic unity in addressing global challenges, saying, “The US needs Europe, and Europe needs the US. We must work together to overcome challenges to democracy.”
The unresolved division of Cyprus, stemming from Turkey’s 1974 invasion and subsequent occupation of the island’s northern third, remains a significant challenge. Despite multiple rounds of UN-led peace talks, including the failed 2017 negotiations in Crans-Montana, a resolution has yet to be reached.
Both the UK and US reiterated their commitment to supporting Cyprus in its efforts to promote stability and cooperation in the region, reflecting the island’s growing strategic importance on the global stage.
