Smart meter rollout speeds up across Cyprus

EAC crews hit every district in December as the nationwide upgrade enters its next big phase.

Cyprus’ smart-meter upgrade is moving into high gear this month, as the Electricity Authority (EAC) pushes ahead with mass installations across all districts, the next major phase in a nationwide rollout Knews first reported earlier this year.

The upgrade campaign, which aims to replace outdated analog meters with modern, remote-reading devices, will continue at a brisk pace throughout December. EAC crews will be moving street by street, swapping meters in targeted neighborhoods from Nicosia to Paphos.

Here’s where teams will be working in the coming weeks:

Nicosia
• Strovolos — the area between Stavrou Avenue, Spyros Kyprianou Avenue and Strovolos Avenue, including both sides of Tseriou, Stavrou and Strovolos Avenues
• French Ambassador Area
• Lakatamia — between Spyros Kyprianou Avenue and Ippokratous Road up to the Lakatamia Airport limits

Limassol
• Limassol–Mesa Geitonia–Agios Athanasios — south of the Agios Athanasios Industrial Area and on either side of Agios Athanasios and Georgios Grivas Digenis Streets

Larnaca
• Between Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue, Chrysopolitissis Road and Archbishop Kyprianou Avenue up to the port roundabout

Famagusta
• Protaras — Prophet Elias area, from the Etakero side of Protaras–Kavo Greco Avenue up to Protaras Avenue

Paphos
• Between Poseidonos, Apostolos Pavlou, Agioi Anargyroi and Melina Mercouri Avenues

The EAC says each swap requires a brief power cut, usually no more than 20 minutes. “We apologize for any inconvenience,” the Authority noted in its announcement, stressing that the interruption is necessary for safe replacement.

The smart-meter program is expected to make electricity billing more accurate, help detect faults faster, and eventually allow consumers to track their energy use in real time. For now, though, residents should simply expect to see EAC crews at their doorsteps and plan for a short outage as Cyprus edges closer to a fully modernized grid.
