If you were driving around Cyprus last night, chances are you noticed more police on the roads than usual.
In a large-scale overnight operation, police issued 351 traffic fines, arrested four people for offences including drug possession and traffic violations, and impounded 14 vehicles as part of a nationwide crackdown on crime and dangerous driving.
The operation saw officers stop 570 vehicles and check 760 people travelling in them. Police also inspected 49 premises suspected of being linked to illegal activity, resulting in seven reports for various offenses.
Speeding was by far the most common offense, with 75 drivers caught exceeding the speed limit.
Police also caught two motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, while three other drivers are under investigation after preliminary roadside drug tests indicated they may have been driving under the influence of narcotics.
During the operation, officers carried out 126 breathalyser tests and 12 roadside drug tests.
In total, 13 traffic-related cases remain under investigation.
Police said the overnight enforcement campaign is part of its ongoing strategy to increase its visibility, prevent crime and improve road safety across Cyprus. Similar operations will continue daily, with targeted inspections and increased patrols aimed at keeping the public safe.
For many motorists, the message is simple: expect to see more police checks on Cyprus' roads in the weeks ahead.
