Tatar criticized after Azerbaijan’s first direct flight heads to Larnaca

Direct flight from Baku to Larnaca sidesteps occupied Cyprus

Newsroom

The first direct flight from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Larnaca Airport was carried out two days ago by Azerbaijan's state airline, *Yeni Bakış* reported on its front page today.

The flight contradicts longstanding claims by officials from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) about potential direct air links between Baku and the illegal Tymbou (Ercan) airport. The newspaper highlighted past statements from TRNC leader Ersin Tatar and "Transport Minister" Erhan Arıklı, both of whom had previously spoken about the significance and possibility of such connections. Arıklı had even stated in January 2023 that direct flights from Azerbaijan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan would soon begin to the TRNC.

The newspaper also featured three messages from citizens criticizing the situation. One message, signed with the initials E.B., read: "Mr. Ersin, hello. Direct flights from Azerbaijan to our island have started. It doesn’t matter if it's to the north or the south. What matters is that it’s flying. This is your success. Congratulations." The other two messages shared similar critical sentiments.
