Press Release
A landmark event celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in STEAM is set to take place on Saturday, 15 February 2025, at the University of Cyprus, titled "Empowered Futures: Celebrating Girls and Women in STEAM".
The event will feature the premiere screening of the mini-documentary "Growing Up in Cyprus: The Voices of Girls." This first-of-its-kind production in Cyprus amplifies the real experiences, challenges, and aspirations of young girls who live in Cyprus. It sheds light on their perspectives, their ambitions, and the barriers they face, bringing their voices to the forefront of the gender equality conversation. A short teaser can be viewed here.
Beyond the documentary screening, the event will include a panel discussion with inspiring Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot UK alumni women role models in STEAM, as well as interactive group conversations with teenage girls, educators, and STEAM professionals. This dynamic exchange aims to inspire and empower young girls to see themselves as future leaders in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics while addressing the structural challenges that still exist.
The celebration is organised by Girls in STEAM Academy, in collaboration with British High Commission Nicosia, the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality, and with the support of the British Council.
The event will close with a reception and a networking session.
Participation to the event is free of charge, but registration is required here.
The event will be held in English.
