Growing number of women scientists in the EU

The number of women working in science across the European Union has been on the rise.

Recent statistics from Eurostat indicate that the number of female scientists in the EU increased by 381,200 in 2023, reaching a total of 7.7 million—up from 7.32 million in 2022.

Women now make up 41% of the scientific workforce in the EU.

Among member states, Denmark has the highest proportion of women in scientific roles, at 50.8%. Outside the EU, Norway leads with 54%. On the other end, Malta has the lowest share, with women accounting for just 34.3% of the sector.

Looking at regional data, the Canary Islands report the highest representation of women in science at 59.2%, while Hungary’s Közép-Magyarország region has the lowest, at 30.1%.

In Cyprus, women comprise 42% of the scientific workforce, closely aligning with the EU average.
