A team of U.S. fire investigation experts has identified the exact origin and cause of the recent wildfire in the Limassol mountains, with a final report expected within two weeks, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Monday.

The specialists, from a U.S. Department of Justice unit with experience in more than 40 countries, briefed President Nikos Christodoulides on their findings and methodology. They confirmed the blaze had a single ignition point but declined to disclose details on the cause until the report is complete.

Letymbiotis said the findings will guide the government’s next steps, including an assessment of Cyprus’ firefighting capabilities and challenges posed by climate change. The government intends to make the report public, barring personal data concerns.

Meanwhile, Cyprus has begun the process of seeking European Union compensation for the damage. Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna is leading the effort, coordinating ministries and maintaining direct contact with EU officials.
