It may be mid-August, but while our American friends are already sharpening pencils and packing school lunches, here in Cyprus, the season of swimsuits, souvlaki, and sunscreen refuses to check out. Cruise ships may be unloading sunburnt travellers and planes may be dropping off tanned returnees, but summer is hanging on like a stubborn cousin at a wedding who just won’t leave the dance floor.
So, what’s the story with the weather?
A seasonal low-pressure system is swirling around, but don’t worry, today’s skies will stay mostly clear. Winds will start off politely, blowing from the southwest to northwest at a breezy 3–4 Beaufort, but later they’ll show off a bit, flexing up to 4–5 Beaufort, and in windward spots, as strong as 5–6. Translation: hats and lightweight umbrellas beware. Let’s just say the sea will be “slightly rough to rough”, perfect for adventurous swimmers, maybe less so for inflatable flamingos.
Temperatures will sizzle: around 36°C inland, 31°C on the western coasts, 35°C elsewhere on the coasts, and a relatively fresh 30°C in the higher mountains. Yes, that’s “relatively fresh” in Cyprus terms. Pack your jumper if you’re heading up Troodos.
Tonight, things calm down. Clear skies stick around, winds soften to 3–4 Beaufort, and the seas vary from calm-ish in the east to a bit choppier elsewhere. Overnight lows will slide down to 21°C inland, 23°C along the coasts, and a cool 18°C up in the mountains, the kind of night that makes you wonder if it’s finally time to dig the blanket out of the cupboard (answer: not quite).
The outlook
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are looking clear, sunny, and very summery. By Friday, temperatures will creep above the seasonal average. In other words: summer isn’t clocking out early this year.
So go ahead: order that frappé, book another beach day, and keep your sunscreen within arm’s reach. September might be peeking around the corner, but Cyprus clearly hasn’t got the memo.
