Today's weather, lightly seasoned with dust and drama

From your faithful wannabe meteorologists; still here, still watching the skies so you don’t have to.

Newsroom

A weak low-pressure system is loitering in the area, not doing much except kicking up some dust and making the air feel like it needs a good sweep. Don’t worry, the dust will start to settle tomorrow, possibly out of boredom.

Today’s weather is playing it mostly cool with clear skies, though some mid- and high-level clouds will drift in here and there, trying to look important. They may even squeeze out a light, isolated shower just to keep us guessing. Winds start off in a lazy southeast to south direction, blowing gently at around 3 Beaufort. If you’re on the western coast, brace for a bit more attitude. Winds there will be moderate to strong, clocking in at 4 to 5 Beaufort. As the day wears on, winds will pull a swift costume change and come at us from the southwest to northwest, mostly light to moderate, but with some local gusts still flexing at 4 to 5 Beaufort.

The sea is mostly behaving, staying calm to slightly rough, nothing a seasoned swimmer or smug paddleboarder can’t handle. Temperatures will once again test your limits inland, where we’re heading for around 39°C. The northern, southeastern, and eastern coasts will simmer at about 32°C, while the remaining coastal areas hover near 30°C. If you’ve managed to escape to higher ground, the mountains will kindly offer a far more tolerable 28°C.

Tonight, the skies stay mostly clear, though the west will see some low clouds sneaking in later like they forgot their keys and didn’t want to wake anyone. Winds will keep up their southwest to northwest direction, generally light to moderate, but may get feisty again at 4 to 5 Beaufort in the west and southwest coastal zones. The sea remains calm to slightly rough, though again, a bit more restless in the west as we head into the early hours.

Temperatures tonight will cool off to around 18°C inland, 20°C along the northern and western coasts, 19°C in the south and east, and a brisk 15°C in the higher mountainous areas. You’ll want a light layer, yes, even if it’s technically still May.

As for the rest of the week: Tuesday brings mostly clear skies, with some clouds forming in the afternoon, mostly over the mountains, where a lonely light shower might make a brief appearance. Winds will gain strength, particularly along the coast, so beach umbrellas beware. Wednesday sees a bit more cloud cover across the board, again with some scattered showers likely in the mountainous areas during the afternoon. Winds continue to show off near the coastline. By Thursday, we’re seeing more widespread cloud flirtation, and by the afternoon, we may get some isolated showers and even a cheeky thunderstorm, mostly in the east and perhaps inland.

Temperatures on Tuesday will finally take a step back from the heatwave high horse, dropping noticeably and staying closer to seasonal norms through Thursday. It’s not cool-cool, but it’s getting there.
