Cyprus slips in Blue Flag rankings but holds firm on coastal quality

Island drops 12 Blue Flags but remains a global leader in coastal cleanliness and sustainability.

Newsroom

Cyprus saw a slight decline in its internationally recognized beach quality ratings this year, with 64 beaches and two marinas receiving Blue Flag certification for 2025, down from 76 beaches in 2024.

Despite the drop, the Mediterranean island continues to rank among the world’s top destinations for coastal cleanliness and environmental management, placing 12th globally in the annual Blue Flag listings. The program, run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), honors beaches, marinas and tourism vessels that meet rigorous standards in water quality, safety, accessibility and environmental education.

This year, the Blue Flag was awarded to 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas and 158 tourism boats worldwide.

Cyprus continues to stand out for the high concentration of certified sites relative to its size and population, maintaining one of the highest Blue Flag densities per coastline kilometer globally.

Spain topped this year’s global rankings with 749 total awards, including 642 beaches, followed by Greece with 657, and Turkey retaining third place with strong showings across multiple categories.
