Troodos gets its White Christmas, thanks to ''Elena''

Snowfall creates a winter wonderland in Troodos, while heavy rains and storms sweep across the rest of Cyprus.

It looks like the holiday classic "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" got a real-life rendition in Troodos this year, as the mountain region woke up to a snowy wonderland late on Christmas Day. Snowfall, brought by the bad weather system dubbed "Elena," blanketed the area, delivering a postcard-perfect holiday scene.

Videos circulating on social media capture the magic of snowflakes dancing against the backdrop of Troodos' pine trees. But while the snow brought joy to many, it also caused some disruption. According to police, roads such as Prodromos-Troodos and Platres-Troodos are now accessible only to vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive or anti-slip chains. Drivers have been urged to proceed with caution as icy conditions prevail.

Meanwhile, “Elena” wasn’t satisfied with just spreading snow in the mountains. Heavy rains lashed other parts of the island, prompting a yellow weather warning that remains in effect until midday Thursday. Thunderstorms, hail, and even sleet are making their presence felt across Cyprus, keeping umbrellas and raincoats in high demand.

Weather Report: Soggy with a Side of Snow

Tonight, the island will stay under the influence of the persistent low-pressure system “Elena.” Expect cloudy skies, scattered showers, and isolated thunderstorms. The mountains will see more snow or sleet, with frost forming in higher altitudes and foothills. Temperatures will dip to 6°C inland, 10°C along the coast, and 1°C in the higher mountains. Winds will range from light to moderate, but could pick up during storms.

Thursday (26/12):

The unsettled weather continues with more showers, thunderstorms, and snow in the mountains. Daytime temperatures will hover around 16°C inland, 17°C on the coast, and a chilly 5°C in the mountains. Visibility might be limited in some areas due to fog or low cloud cover, so drivers should remain cautious.

Looking Ahead:

By Friday, conditions will start improving in the late afternoon, but a drop in temperatures will keep the air brisk. Saturday promises clearer skies with isolated showers in some areas, while Sunday reintroduces a mix of rain and snow in the mountains.

For now, Troodos is holding onto its snowy crown, making it the perfect escape for those chasing a true winter wonderland. Just make sure to pack those chains and a warm coat if you plan on visiting.

Stay safe, and may the season’s chill bring you warmth at heart!
