Trump launches TrumpRx, promises big discounts on prescription drugs

Website offers up to 90% off for consumers outside government insurance programs.

President Donald Trump unveiled TrumpRx on Thursday, a government-backed website offering deep discounts on 43 prescription medications, including insulin, fertility treatments, obesity drugs, and asthma medications.

Trump hailed the initiative as “one of the most transformative health care initiatives of all time,” saying Americans have long paid more than their share for drugs while subsidizing global profits. Savings range from 33% to more than 90%, with the fertility drug Cetrotide dropping from $316 to $22 per dose.

The site does not sell drugs directly. Users print or download coupons to redeem at pharmacies. It also lists companion medications and participating pharmacies. Telemedicine platform GoodRx is a partner, supplying pricing for Pfizer and other manufacturers.

There are limits: the discounts are only for people not enrolled in government programs like Medicare or Medicaid. Anyone with both private and government coverage is excluded.

Experts praised the move for helping uninsured consumers and increasing transparency but warned a government-run platform could interfere with private competition. The administration said more drugs will be added weekly under its “Most Favored Nation” pricing plan, designed to match U.S. drug costs to the lowest global prices.

While TrumpRx is U.S.-focused, its ripple effects could reach Europe. Lower U.S. drug prices may influence global pricing negotiations, potentially affecting European pharmaceutical markets. In Cyprus, where imported drug prices are high, some experts suggest the initiative could eventually pressure local pharmacies and distributors to adjust costs, but only indirectly.
