Tuesday weather tag-team: Two low-pressure systems bring the drama

An afternoon switch with skies turning from hazy to stormy later today.

Newsroom

If yesterday felt like a warm-up, today is the main event. We have a tag-team situation in the atmosphere: a weak low-pressure system is already here, and a second, fresh low-pressure system is arriving this evening to keep the momentum going. Add some suspended thin dust to the mix, and you get a Tuesday that feels a bit cluttered.

Today begins with a "partly to mostly cloudy" vibe. You might spot an isolated shower over the mountains early on, but the real activity is scheduled for the late afternoon. That’s when the sky is expected to open up with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. If you are in the higher mountains, expect that rain to turn into snow.

The wind will be picking up the pace too. It starts light, but by the afternoon, we are looking at a moderate-to-strong southwesterly breeze (4 to 5 Beaufort). The sea will respond accordingly, turning slightly rough to rough.

Temperature-wise, it’s a standard January day before the storms hit: 15°C inland, 17°C on the coast, and 7°C in the mountains.

Tonight is when things get noisy. The weather will turn mostly cloudy with intervals of showers and isolated thunderstorms. The winds on windward coasts will ramp up to a very strong 6 Beaufort, and the sea in the west will be rough. Fresh snow is also on the cards for the Troodos peaks.

The outlook

Wednesday (tomorrow): The unsettled theme continues. Expect partly cloudy skies with rounds of showers, isolated thunderstorms, and more snow or sleet on the peaks. Temperatures will take a slight dip.

Thursday & Friday: The drama fades slightly, but it doesn't disappear. We are looking at partly cloudy skies with isolated showers likely sticking to the west and south coasts.

Snow update: Chionistra is currently holding at 17 centimeters, but tonight's system should add a fresh layer to the slopes.
