Good morning, Cyprus! The weekend is in the rearview mirror, the alarm clock has done its worst, and we are back to the grind. The weather seems to be matching the general "Monday mood" today; a little grey, a little indecisive, and yes, the dust is back in the atmosphere just to smudge the view.
A weak low-pressure system is taking over from the high pressure that gave us a calm Sunday, signalling that the week is going to get progressively wetter.
Today is a bit of a mixed bag. We are looking at partly to mainly cloudy skies for your morning commute. While it might stay dry for many, don’t be surprised if you catch an isolated shower passing through. The real wake-up call, however, is the wind. It’s blowing from the northeast to southeast and it’s got some energy behind it, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. If you’re near the coast, the sea is matching that chop, ranging from slightly rough to rough.
Temperature-wise, it’s remarkably standard for late January. We are reaching 16°C inland and a mild 18°C on the coast. In the higher mountains, it’s a cool 8°C, so you’ll definitely want that jacket if you’re heading up.
Tonight, the clouds will thicken, and the West coast is likely to see the first proper signs of the incoming system with some isolated rain. The winds will shift to a southeasterly/southwesterly direction and settle at a moderate pace.
The outlook:
If today feels like the "calm before the storm," that’s because it basically is.
Tuesday (tomorrow): It starts mainly cloudy with a few showers, but the real shift happens late in the evening. That’s when the weather gear kicks into overdrive with local rain, thunderstorms, and snow or sleet returning to the high mountains.
Wednesday: This looks to be the wettest day of the week. Expect a unsettled mix of rain, thunderstorms at intervals, and wintery conditions on the peaks.
Thursday: The system begins to fade, leaving us with lingering clouds and just the chance of a stray shower.
Snow update: For those tracking the ski season, Chionistra is currently sitting at 18 centimeters of snow. With the fresh precipitation coming mid-week, that number might just get a boost.
So, strap on your emotional sweatband, secure your coffee lid, and let's high-knee our way through the Monday haze.
