Severe weather sweeping across Cyprus on Friday triggered flooding in multiple districts, prompting an emergency response from the Fire Service and the activation of local authorities as heavy rain and thunderstorms affected the island.
By early Friday morning, the Fire Service had responded to flooding incidents in three districts, according to its spokesperson. Calls involved water accumulation in properties and basements, highlighting the impact of persistent rainfall associated with an unstable weather system affecting the region.
In the capital, Nicosia, authorities received four calls related to flooded properties and underground spaces. Two similar incidents were recorded in Larnaca, including one involving stormwater drainage channels, while in the Famagusta district, emergency crews responded to two calls concerning flooded buildings and basements. In cases where roads were inundated, local authorities were mobilized to assist with traffic management and water removal.
The flooding occurred as a low-pressure system moved through the area, bringing widespread cloud cover, local rainfall and isolated thunderstorms. Weather officials warned that some storms could produce hail, while snow or sleet was expected in higher mountainous areas. Conditions were forecast to gradually improve after midday, though intermittent cloud cover was expected to persist.
Winds ranged from light to moderate, strengthening along coastal areas, while seas were reported as rough to locally rough. Temperatures reached about 14 degrees Celsius inland, near 17 degrees along the coast and around 7 degrees in higher elevations. Overnight temperatures were expected to drop significantly, with frost likely in mountainous regions.
Authorities said a Yellow Weather Warning remained in effect from late Thursday night through Saturday afternoon, urging the public to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone areas. Snow accumulation in the Troodos range was measured at approximately 15 centimeters at the time of the latest weather bulletin.
Meteorologists forecast that conditions will remain variable through the weekend, with mostly cloudy skies on Sunday and Monday and a return of isolated rain and thunderstorms by Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly above seasonal averages.
Officials continue to monitor conditions as cleanup and response efforts remain ongoing in affected areas.
