Turkey steps up focus on Cyprus as Israel ties expand

A Greek analysis says Ankara is increasingly scrutinizing Cyprus' growing cooperation with Israel and its strategic partnerships in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus is finding itself more frequently at the center of discussions about Israel's growing strategic footprint in the Eastern Mediterranean, as regional rivalries continue to reshape security and diplomatic relationships across the region.

According to an article by Vasilis Nedos in Kathimerini Greece, concerns are growing in both Athens and Ankara over the evolving security landscape surrounding Israel, Greece and Cyprus, particularly as cooperation between the three countries continues to expand in defense and strategic affairs.

The report points to recent comments from Turkey's Ministry of National Defense, which described the Republic of Cyprus as an Israeli "protectorate," one of Ankara's strongest public criticisms of Nicosia's relationship with Israel in recent years. Turkish officials have also linked Cyprus' growing cooperation with Israel to agreements that allow a long-term French military presence on the island.

The remarks reflect Turkey's increasing focus on developments in Cyprus as part of the broader competition for influence in the Eastern Mediterranean. Analysts cited in the report suggest that Ankara now views Israel's presence and partnerships in Cyprus as a significant factor in regional security calculations.

At the same time, Israel has become an increasingly important defense partner for Greece. Major procurement programs involving Israeli technology have strengthened military ties between the two countries, a trend that some observers believe could further complicate relations between Greece and Turkey.

While Cyprus is not directly involved in these defense acquisitions, the island's close cooperation with both Greece and Israel means it is often drawn into the same geopolitical discussions.

The article also notes that the government in Athens has sought to separate its relationship with the State of Israel from the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration. Greek officials have publicly criticized certain Israeli military operations, particularly in Lebanon, while maintaining that cooperation with Israel remains strategically important.

This balancing act has become increasingly challenging as the war in Gaza and other regional conflicts continue to generate international criticism of the Israeli government.

For Cyprus, the significance lies less in domestic politics and more in the island's growing role as a strategic hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Relations with Israel have expanded considerably over the past decade, covering areas such as energy, defense, security cooperation and emergency planning.

The article suggests that Turkey's recent statements indicate Cyprus could become a more prominent element in future regional disputes, especially if tensions between Ankara, Athens and Jerusalem intensify.

Another issue raised is maritime security in the wider region. Greece currently leads the European Union's Operation Aspides mission in the Red Sea, and discussions have reportedly taken place regarding a possible future role in demining operations in the Strait of Hormuz should conditions permit.

Any developments affecting shipping routes between the Gulf and Europe are closely watched in Cyprus, given the island's position as a major shipping and maritime services center.

Although the report focuses primarily on Greek foreign and defense policy, it concludes that Cyprus is becoming increasingly relevant to regional security discussions as partnerships with Israel and France deepen and as geopolitical competition in the Eastern Mediterranean continues to evolve.
