Wednesday weather: The heat peaks before taking a polite step back

Inland temperatures climb to 37°C today as summer settles firmly into place.

If you've been insisting that 35°C isn't really hot, today may test your commitment to that argument.

A seasonal low-pressure system is beginning to influence the region, bringing another predominantly sunny day to Cyprus, along with the warmest temperatures of the week so far.

Skies will remain mostly clear for much of the day, although patches of cloud are expected to develop after midday. Winds will begin as gentle sea breezes before strengthening during the afternoon, particularly along exposed coasts, where they could reach 5 Beaufort. The sea will remain calm to slight, becoming slightly rough in windward coastal areas later in the day.

Temperatures will rise to around 37°C inland, 32°C along most coastal areas, 29°C on the west coast and 26°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight will stay mostly clear, though increased low cloud is expected to drift into some coastal districts later on. Conditions will remain calm and pleasant overnight.

Thursday offers little in the way of drama, with largely sunny skies and only occasional cloud. The mountains, however, may squeeze out an isolated afternoon shower.

By Friday and Saturday, the atmosphere becomes a little more energetic. Periods of increased cloud are expected, while afternoon cloud build-up could trigger local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous and inland areas.

The good news for anyone already eyeing the air-conditioning remote is that temperatures are expected to ease gradually through Saturday, slipping back towards what passes for normal at this time of year, though "normal" remains a relative term when Cyprus in June is involved.
