Monday weather: Freddo season is officially upon us

Isolated afternoon thunderstorms may briefly interrupt an otherwise sunny start to the week.

Newsroom

It's Monday again. Parents and children are caught in that strange in-between season when school has ended, summer camps haven't quite begun, and households are debating whether it's time to graduate from electric fans to full-time air conditioning. Even coffee orders are in transition, with hot espressos quietly giving way to freddos.

And yes, it's hot. Or at least it feels hot. But can we really complain about 34°C when last summer pushed Cyprus to a near-record 46.1°C, just a whisker away from the all-time high of 46.2°C? Perspective, as they say, is everything.

Today's weather will start on a pleasant note once any early morning mist and low cloud clear. Conditions will then become partly cloudy, with developing cloud from around midday bringing the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains and some inland areas. Winds will remain light to moderate and seas calm to slight.

Temperatures will reach around 34°C inland, 31°C on the south and east coasts, 28°C on the west and north coasts, and 24°C in the higher mountains.

The outlook becomes much simpler from Tuesday onwards, with mostly clear skies expected through Thursday. Temperatures will continue their upward climb, moving above seasonal averages and giving Cyprus a gentle reminder that summer is only just getting started.
