Police are investigating the suspected poisoning of two dogs in the village of Alaminos after poisoned bait was found at the scene, authorities said Thursday.

The incident, which occurred June 6, has led to concern among residents and animal welfare advocates. The dogs, identified as Snouby and Nelly, died after ingesting the bait, according to the Animal Action Team of the Ecologist Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation.

“Snouby and Nelly, two dogs from the village of Alaminos, were poisoned and died a painful death, causing immense grief to their guardians,” the group said in a statement. “Bait was found in the area and collected by the police.”

Police confirmed the investigation is ongoing. Under Cypriot law, animal poisoning is a criminal offense and can carry a prison sentence.

The Animal Action Team urged authorities to pursue the case and called on anyone with information to come forward.

“We call on the police to make every effort to fully solve the case and bring those responsible to justice,” the group said.

Animal rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about cases of pet poisoning in Cyprus, calling it a persistent and troubling issue.

“This is not just a crime against defenseless animals. It reflects a disturbing lack of empathy and accountability in our society,” the group added.
