Two road fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours involving a young biker and an elderly driver, with both victims dying in hospital days after they were involved in separate accidents.

Police said an elderly male, identified as 89-year-old Andreas Stylianou, died in hospital at Larnaca General, three weeks after he was involved in a freak accident on the highway.

Local media said Stylianou was standing in front of his vehicle, which was parked on the hard shoulder of Larnaca-Ayia Napa motorway, when another car driven by a 29-year-old male slammed into the parked vehicle from behind.

The incident took place at the Livadia exit in the early afternoon on September 24, with reports saying Stylianou, who had car trouble, was seriously injured in the incident. Police later clarified Stylianou’s vehicle was parked partially on the hard shoulder and partially on the road exit asphalt.

Local media said a pickup truck made an illegal turn as it was emerging from a parking lot, blocking the path of the biker and his passenger

Another road fatality was reported on Wednesday evening, one week after a young biker collided with another vehicle in downtown Limassol.

Local media said a pickup truck driven by a 51-year-old male made an illegal turn as he was emerging from a parking lot onto Agias Zonis Road, blocking the path of the biker and his 19-year-old passenger.

The 18-year-old was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital in critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery. His male passenger was taken to Limassol General Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Police said the pickup driver was detained for questioning.
