A local biker from Limassol was killed in a road accident on Monday after he crashed into a vehicle that crossed the road and blocked his way.

According to local media, 35-year-old Limassol resident Georgios Charitou was riding his motorcycle on Monday afternoon along Syergatismou Avenue in Pano Polemidia, a northern suburb, when he was involved in a fatal accident.

The vehicle entered the road from an open field in order to cross the road in an attempt to reach a car-wash on the opposite side

Police said around 3:40pm, a car driven by a 58-year-old female driver blocked Charitou’s path, with the biker ejected from his seat and fatally wounded.

The biker was rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival. The driver of the car and her 35-year-old passenger reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Additional reports said the car made an illegal maneuver by entering the road from an open field in order to cross Synergatismou in an attempt to reach a car-wash on the opposite side.

Media sources said Charitou was said to be speeding while it was confirmed that he was not wearing his helmet at the time of the incident.

Police told Knews an arrest warrant for causing an accident was issued for the driver but it was not immediately carried out, saying the woman was in need of medical treatment at a cardiology clinic.

A breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in her breath, while police officers are expected to detain the woman later for questioning.
