The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) has stepped up its presence in a section of the buffer zone in Nicosia following a disturbance involving thrown stones and firecrackers earlier this week.

According to UNFICYP spokesperson Alim Siddique, the incident took place on Wednesday along Markou Drakou Street, in an area designated for non-military use within the divided capital. In response, peacekeeping patrols were immediately deployed to assess the situation, while local police were notified and asked to intervene. The UN mission has also offered support to authorities as they continue their investigation.

The peacekeeping force strongly criticized the incident, warning that such acts of violence are unacceptable and could threaten public order and stability. It also confirmed that it reached out to relevant officials on both sides of the divide shortly after the incident, aiming to facilitate a thorough and coordinated inquiry into what happened.

UNFICYP further urged all parties to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law, emphasizing that maintaining calm is essential to preserving peace and security on the island.
