Cyprus authorities have received just over 10,000 applications from newly eligible voters ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in May, according to the head of the elections service, Menelaos Vassiliou.
The current electoral register, last updated on January 2, includes approximately 561,000 citizens. However, officials are still reviewing the list to ensure its accuracy by removing deceased individuals and incorporating new registrants. The final number of voters will be confirmed after April 16.
A provisional version of the updated voter list is scheduled to be published early next week. Citizens will have a ten-day window to review the register and raise any objections. Once this process is completed, the finalized roll will be added to the permanent electoral register used for the elections.
In parallel, around 6,000 registered voters have applied to cast their ballots from abroad between early January and early April. Based on current demand, polling stations are expected to operate in cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki, London, and Brussels. However, no stations are anticipated in Patras or Manchester. Authorities are also examining cases where individuals applied both to register as voters and to vote overseas, to ensure all records are accurate.
Following the completion of the electoral roll, Parliament is expected to be dissolved on April 23, formally triggering the election process. The Interior Minister will then issue the official decree announcing the elections, while candidates must submit their nominations by May 6.
The parliamentary elections will take place on May 24, with polling stations open from 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening. Parliamentary elections in Cyprus are held every five years.
