UN peacekeepers in Cyprus stepped in to defuse a situation in the Avlona area on Tuesday, following activity inside the buffer zone.
According to Alim Siddik, spokesperson for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the incident began when a Greek Cypriot carried out farming work close to the northern ceasefire line. This prompted a response from Turkish Cypriot security personnel, who entered the area.
UNFICYP engaged with all sides to prevent escalation and keep conditions unchanged on the ground. After these contacts, the Turkish Cypriot personnel withdrew from the location, and the situation was brought under control without further incident.
The peacekeeping force continues to keep a close watch on the area. Maintaining calm and preserving existing arrangements in this sensitive zone remains one of its main priorities.
