Tomorrow, investigators and senior police officials are expected to hold their first private meeting with a special FBI team that has arrived in Cyprus to assist with the “Sandy” case.

According to available information, the team includes three members, one of whom leads the mission. Officials have made it clear that the American personnel will not conduct investigations or take statements. As representatives of a foreign law enforcement agency, they do not have that authority within the Republic of Cyprus.

Sources say the team’s role will focus on reviewing existing testimony, identifying key points, and spotting possible inconsistencies in statements. Their work may also include assessing credibility, analyzing behavior, and examining the profiles of individuals connected to the case. The team is expected to receive a full briefing on the progress made so far, including collected statements, ongoing investigative steps, telecommunications data, and other evidence.

The FBI’s involvement will center on evaluating material already gathered, without collecting new evidence or taking additional statements.

Reports describe the team as highly experienced, with expertise in behavioral and investigative analysis. Their background in complex cases is expected to provide an additional layer of review and help support more reliable conclusions.

Authorities emphasize that responsibility for evaluating and handling the case remains with Cypriot officials. Investigators have already carried out extensive work across all aspects of the case.

Collection of statements continues

Police are continuing to take statements. Those interviewed include former officials and individuals mentioned in messages allegedly sent by the person known as “Sandy.” Among them are former AKEL Secretary General Andros Kyprianou, independent MP Kostis Efstathiou, former Supreme Court President Myron Nicolatos, and lawyer Polys Polyviou.

At the same time, police are examining “Sandy’s” background, including past employment and a short-term position at the post office through ANAD.

Responses expected from Europol

Results are also expected from Europol, which has received telecommunications data related to the case. A source says analyses are underway in Cyprus Police laboratories equipped with ISO-certified systems. As the investigation continues and data is cross-checked, the overall picture is becoming clearer.

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, said the final report on the “Sandy” case is not aimed in any specific direction. Speaking on state television, he responded to claims by Makarios Drousiotis about a possible cover-up. He stated that the Chief of Police has been instructed to complete the investigation as quickly as possible. According to him, the report will take a full 360-degree approach, examining both the authenticity and the content of the messages. He added that any criminal responsibility that emerges should be addressed.
