US House votes to impeach Trump

White House confident the Senate would exonerate the US President

Source: Reuters

Donald Trump became the third US president to be impeached as the House of Representatives formally charged him on Wednesday with abuse of power and obstructing Congress.

As voting continued, supporters of impeachment crossed the 216-vote threshold needed to secure a majority in the House.

The Democratic-led House’s passage of two articles of impeachment on a mostly party-line vote sets the stage for a trial next month in the Republican-controlled Senate - friendlier terrain for Trump - on whether to convict and remove the Republican president from office.

The White House said it was confident the US Senate would exonerate President Trump.
