The Health Insurance Organization said that referrals to specialist doctors under the General Healthcare System will now be valid for 12 months instead of six.
The change takes effect July 31 and applies only to referrals issued on or after that date. The number of visits per referral remains limited to two. Referrals issued before July 31 will keep their original six-month validity.
The decision follows requests from associations of personal and specialist doctors, as well as experience gained since the healthcare system was introduced.
“The new regulation offers beneficiaries better service and greater flexibility, giving them more time to schedule their visits to specialist doctors,” the organization said in a statement.
