European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reaffirmed the EU's support for renewed efforts to reach a settlement of the Cyprus issue following a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín.
In a statement after their meeting, von der Leyen welcomed the work being carried out by Holguín and UN Secretary-General António Guterres to advance negotiations under the UN framework. She said any settlement should be pursued in line with the principles, values and legal order of the European Union.
The Commission President said the European Commission stands ready to contribute "with all the assistance and tools at its disposal" to help support the process.
Von der Leyen also referred to the European Commission's recently appointed Special Representative for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto, saying he has already begun contacts with the main parties involved in the negotiations.
Following his first meeting with Holguín, Fitto said in a separate statement that the European Union remains fully committed to supporting the UN-led process aimed at achieving a settlement of the Cyprus issue.
