A water shortage is affecting parts of Nicosia on Thursday with officials blaming problems with desalination facilities on poor weather.
According to the Water Board of Nicosia, all desalination units are out of order, causing serious water shortages in Nicosia district.
WBN director Nicos Zambakides went on live radio Thursday morning to confirm that all desalination plants have been out of order since Wednesday at noon due to rough seas conditions and poor weather.
Zambakides said there are water cuts already in parts of Nicosia, including the municipalities of Strovolos, as well as Agios Dhometios and Engomi.
Announcements regarding the status of desalination plants will follow later in the day, while it was not clear whether operation could resume immediately. The nature of the problem was not immediately made known.
Water boards throughout the island are asking residents to avoid overconsumption of water for at least 24 hours.
Problems with a water treatment in Paphos were also reported due to weather, but no further details were made available.
