“We are not intimidated by threats,” declares the Customs Officers Branch of PASYDY in a statement condemning “in the strongest terms the threats directed at members of the staff and management of the Customs Department, which in recent times have escalated dangerously and blatantly.”

The Branch emphasizes that “the Department’s staff carries out a difficult and crucial task, working around the clock throughout the year, both at the points of entry into the Republic of Cyprus and at the crossing points.” It adds that “the Department’s officers are tasked with the proper enforcement of legislation, remaining uninfluenced by conflicting interests among various groups amid the prevailing market competition.”

“As a Branch, we wish to send a clear message to all concerned that such actions will not deter us, and that we will continue to carry out our demanding duties with even greater dedication and resolve, despite any threats or intimidation,” the statement continues. “Such actions are unacceptable and condemnable and have no place in a lawful society,” it stresses.

The Branch calls on all Department personnel “to continue fulfilling their role and mission with focus and determination, in order to safeguard public safety and protect the interests of the State.”

At the same time, the Branch expects the state “to declare its full support for our colleagues and to address the long-standing issues faced by the Department’s staff, aiming for their prompt resolution.”
