Weather forecast: Cloudy skies, occasional airborne patio furniture

Barbara’s blowing kisses - some wet, some windy - and your umbrella might not survive the romance.

Newsroom

Barbara, the low-pressure system with a flair for theatrics, is currently pirouetting over the northern Aegean and heading northeast. Her entourage, a moody weather front, is expected to tap on our island’s shoulder tonight, bringing gifts of cloud cover and the occasional sky tantrum.

Today: Expect the sky to wear its grumpiest shade of gray, with scattered rain and the odd thunderstorm popping in like plot twists. Winds will flex from the southwest and northwest, starting at “firm handshake” (4-5 Beaufort) and occasionally reaching “hold onto your pets” (5-6 Beaufort). The sea will be doing its best impression of a washing machine, slightly rough to rough, with the west coast getting the spin cycle. Temperatures will peak at a modest 27°C inland and along the southeast and eastern coasts, around 25°C on the western, southwestern, and northern edges, and a brisk 17°C in the mountains (perfect for pretending it’s autumn).

Tonight: Clouds will linger like guests who didn’t get the hint, bringing more showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two near the coast. Winds will mellow slightly inland and in the mountains (3-4 Beaufort), but coastal areas will still feel the pushy side of Barbara (4-5 Beaufort). Seas will be unevenly cranky; slightly rough in the east, rough elsewhere, and temporarily extra rough in the west. Translation: maybe skip the moonlit paddleboarding.

Thursday: Barbara’s mood swings continue with mostly cloudy skies, scattered showers, and the occasional thunderstorm cameo. Temperatures will take a nosedive inland and in the mountains, landing well below the seasonal average. So yes, your hoodie finally gets its moment.

Friday: Clouds will thicken like plotlines in a soap opera, with a chance of isolated showers. Nothing dramatic, just enough to keep your laundry indoors.

Saturday: The skies will finally remember how to smile, turning mostly clear with some patches of cloud still loitering. Temperatures will start climbing again, inching toward normal, but not quite there yet. Summer’s still warming up its comeback tour.
