Wednesday forecast: The clouds are gathering for a noisy guest list

The sky is shifting its mood and the wind is looking to bring the Sahara along for the ride.

Newsroom

The weather was playing it safe yesterday, but now it's here to break the silence. Today, a low-pressure system is gradually moving in, and it’s bringing some unstable energy to our Wednesday. The morning starts with a deceptive calm, but by the afternoon, the clouds will be having a full-blown meeting over our heads, likely resulting in some isolated showers that will do their best to wash the early layers of suspended dust onto your windshield.

The wind is the real headline-stealer today. It’s coming in from the northeast and east, starting at a moderate 3 to 4 Beaufort but amping up to a very strong 6 Beaufort on the windward coasts by the afternoon. If you’re near the sea, expect things to get quite rough. On the bright side, temperatures are making a final spring-like push, hitting 21°C inland and reaching a lovely 23°C on the west and north coasts. Even the mountains are enjoying a relative heatwave at 16°C before the cold front pulls the rug out from under them.

Tonight, the transition continues. Expect local showers at intervals, with the wind staying busy enough to keep the sea restless. It’s the perfect night to double-check that your shutters are secured and your car windows are rolled all the way up.

Looking toward the rest of the week, the weather is doubling down:

Thursday (tomorrow): The dust is expected to increase temporarily, giving the air that familiar gritty feel. This will be accompanied by periods of local rain and isolated thunderstorms.

Friday & Saturday: The "low" officially takes over. We’re looking at more thunderstorms, and don't be surprised if hail makes an appearance during the heavier bursts.

Up on the highest peaks of Troodos, the rain is expected to trade itself in for sleet or snow. If you were hoping for a late-season snowball fight, this weekend might be your last shot.
