Concerns have been raised over construction activity at a seaside restaurant in Latsi after a prominent environmental politician questioned whether the works may be taking place within a protected coastal zone.
George Perdikes, a long-time environmental advocate and former leader of the Cyprus Green Party, posted photographs and comments on social media on Saturday in what he described as the start of construction works adjacent to the beach.
In the Instagram post, Perdikes wrote that construction had begun at a seaside restaurant and appeared, “at first glance,” to involve a concrete extension inside the coastal protection area. The post included photographs showing metal structures, building materials, and ground works taking place directly next to the shoreline.
“I hope that a family connection with a well-known politician from a major party will not prevent the authorities from investigating the complaint and addressing any possible - potential - illegality,” Perdikes stated in his message.
The images shared with the post show metal beams, construction materials, and prepared ground close to the sandy beach area, suggesting the early stages of structural work. Another photograph appears to show excavation and leveling of ground immediately adjacent to an existing paved terrace.
Coastal protection zones in Cyprus are subject to strict planning regulations intended to prevent construction that could damage beaches or coastal ecosystems. Any development within such areas typically requires specific permits and environmental oversight.
Perdikes, who has served as a Member of the House of Representatives since 2001, has frequently spoken out on environmental and planning issues, particularly those involving coastal development.
Latsi, located near Polis Chrysochous on Cyprus’s northwest coast, is a popular seaside destination known for its beaches, small harbor, and waterfront restaurants. Environmental groups have previously expressed concerns about overdevelopment along the island’s coastline.
