Wednesday, January 28th weather report: The ''mud rain'' edition

High dust levels meet rain and hail today. Don't bother washing the car just yet.

Newsroom

Good morning, Cyprus. If you washed your car yesterday, look away now. A low-pressure system is collaborating with suspended atmospheric dust today, which means any rain that falls is likely to leave a mark. It’s a gritty, grey start to the middle of the week, and the atmosphere isn’t holding back.

Today is going to be unsettled, to say the least. The sky will remain mainly cloudy, delivering intervals of local rain and isolated thunderstorms. And because simple rain isn't enough, there is a chance of hail rattling the windows during those storms. If you are in the higher mountains, that precipitation will fall as snow or sleet.

The wind is currently shifting from southeasterly to northwesterly. It will start calm enough, but expect it to pick up to a strong 4 to 5 Beaufort in the southwest, west, and north. The sea in those areas will get rougher as the day goes on.

Temperature-wise, we are looking at 15°C inland and 16°C on the coast; mild, but damp. In the higher mountains, it’s a chilly 6°C.

Tonight, the clouds aren't going anywhere. We expect isolated rain to persist, focusing its energy mainly along the west and north coasts. The sea will remain choppy in the west, so a coastal evening walk might be a wet affair.

The outlook

Thursday & Friday: The pattern of "rinse and repeat" continues. We are looking at mainly cloudy skies, more isolated rain, potential thunderstorms, and hail. The mountains will keep receiving snow or sleet.

Saturday ('the big one'): Mark this on your calendar. While the rain and hail continue, the real story will be the wind. A strong to very strong southwesterly wind field is expected to sweep across the island.

Despite the stormy weather, temperatures will actually gradually rise through Saturday, pushing us slightly above the seasonal average.

Snow update: The snow depth at Chionistra has settled to 16 centimeters, just enough to keep the winter spirit alive amidst the dust.

So, cancel the car wash appointment, grab an umbrella that can handle a gust, and let’s power through the mid-week slush.
