Wednesday weather: Storm clouds gather over Cyprus as temperatures take a downward turn

Rain and thunderstorms could persist through Saturday as temperatures gradually fall below seasonal averages and dust begins to clear.

Newsroom

A weak low-pressure system continues to affect the area, bringing unsettled conditions, occasional showers and thunderstorms. Light dust will also remain suspended in the atmosphere, although thankfully it is expected to gradually clear from tomorrow. So, a little sunshine, a little rain and a bit of dust for good measure. The weather really is spoiling us.

Today: Increased cloud cover will greet us this morning, particularly across the western half of the island, bringing local showers and possibly an isolated brief thunderstorm. As the day progresses, conditions will become partly cloudy and at times cloudy, with further showers and isolated thunderstorms expected.

Winds will blow mainly from the southwest to northwest, initially light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, before strengthening around midday to moderate or strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will start off slightly rough and remain generally slightly rough. Nothing particularly inviting for a leisurely swim, unless you've fallen out with your common sense.

Temperatures will reach around 26°C inland and along the eastern and southern coasts, 24°C on the western and northern coasts, and a much cooler 15°C in the highest mountains. Quite the difference. You could practically experience two seasons without leaving the island.

Tonight: Increased cloud cover is expected locally, with isolated showers possible in the west and north. Winds will remain mainly southwesterly to northwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort, while the sea will generally be slightly rough.

Thursday (tomorrow): Cloud will continue to come and go, mainly at medium and high levels, bringing local light showers. After midday, developing clouds could produce isolated showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm, particularly in the mountains and southeastern areas.

In other words, the morning might look promising, but don't let a patch of blue sky convince you to cancel your umbrella subscription.

Friday: Mostly cloudy skies are expected, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms making occasional appearances. Friday, apparently, has decided to join the wet weather club.

Saturday: Cloud cover will increase locally again, with isolated showers or thunderstorms possible after midday, mainly in the mountains and areas south of the Troodos range. If you're heading outdoors, keep an eye on the sky. It seems to have commitment issues with sunshine this week.

Temperature outlook: Temperatures will gradually fall through Saturday, eventually dropping below the average climatic values for this time of year. After enjoying relatively mild conditions, Cyprus is finally getting a reminder that the calendar says November.

The bottom line: A wet and occasionally stormy few days lie ahead, with showers and thunderstorms possible across Cyprus through Saturday. Dust should gradually clear from Thursday, but temperatures will continue to fall, eventually slipping below seasonal averages.

So, perhaps put the sunglasses away, keep the umbrella handy and accept that autumn has officially decided to make itself comfortable.
