Newsroom
The extended barometric system affectionately (or not) named ELENA is still calling the shots, bringing another round of quirky winter weather. If you thought you’d seen the last of her, think again—another disturbance is expected Sunday, just in case you were getting too comfortable.
Meanwhile, acording to the police, the Platres - Troodos, Karvounas - Troodos, and Prodromos - Troodos roads are open only to vehicles equipped with snow chains or four-wheel drive. Frosty conditions are also affecting the Pedoulas - Prodromos, Prodromos - Platres, and Prodromos - Lemythos roads. The Police are urging drivers to exercise extra caution, drive at low speeds, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
Clouds, Rain, and Some Snow
Today’s forecast has it all: mostly cloudy skies, scattered showers, thunderstorms, and even snowfall in the mountains. If you’re heading up to Troodos to catch a glimpse of winter wonderland, you’re in luck—the peaks are rocking a frosty 16 cm of snow. Thunderstorms might also bring hail to the mix, so if you hear a loud thud, don’t panic; it’s not ELENA throwing a tantrum—just hail doing its thing.
Fog and low cloud cover may play peek-a-boo with your visibility, so driving around could feel like navigating a giant cotton ball. Thankfully, things are expected to clear up by this evening.
Winds will be taking the scenic route, blowing mainly southeast to south, then shifting northeast to east along the northern coast. They’ll range from light to moderate—3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale, for those keeping score. The sea will be in a mood too, staying a little rough across most areas and downright cranky in the west.
Temperatures will hover around 15°C inland, 16°C along the coast, and a chilly 5°C in the higher mountains. If you’re venturing into frost territory, bundle up—it’s going to be frosty up there!
Tonight: Frost and a Chill in the Air
When night falls, the skies will ease up slightly, becoming partly cloudy. But don’t rule out some rogue rain on the northern coast or a sprinkle of snow in the mountains. Winds will mellow out, shifting directions like they’re trying to find the best Instagram angle, and temperatures will dip to 6°C inland, 9°C on the coast, and a frosty -1°C in the highlands, where frost will make another guest appearance.
The Weekend and Beyond
Looking ahead, temperatures will climb slightly on Saturday—just enough to tease you—before dipping back below seasonal averages by Monday.
So, whether you’re braving the frost in the mountains or dodging hail in the lowlands, remember: ELENA isn’t done with us yet. Stay warm, stay safe, and maybe keep an umbrella handy—it’s going to be a bumpy weather ride!
