A woman in Paphos died on Saturday after she was hit by a van at a pedestrian crossing, with police arresting the driver while her husband who was also struck was said to have suffered a serious head injury.
According to police, a Russian couple was attempting to cross Tombs of the Kings Avenue in Paphos on Saturday afternoon, when they were struck by a van that was moving southbound in the left lane just outside a supermarket.
Any possible traffic violations were still under investigation while the driver was detained on a single charge of causing death by negligence
The incident took place around 1:50pm, when the vehicle struck the two pedestrians as they were attempting to cross the road from right to left, police said.
An ambulance rushed the couple to the Emergency Room at Paphos General Hospital, where 58-year-old Nuriya Toldanova succumbed to her injuries while her 70-year-old husband underwent medical exams after doctors determined he internal bleeding.
Traffic police said the causes of the accident were still under investigation.
It was also unclear whether the push button had been pressed or if there were other vehicles obstructing the view of the driver, said to be a 28-year-old local male driving his work vehicle.
