A woman looking for a loan online ended up losing €10,000 after falling victim to a social media scam.
According to police, the woman came across an advertisement offering loans and clicked on a link that took her to a website. There, she entered her name and telephone number.
On July 24, unknown individuals contacted her and said she needed to pay €10,000 as a guarantee before they could approve the loan.
They sent her a QR code and guided her through the online payment. She followed their instructions and transferred the money.
When the promised loan failed to materialize, the woman realized something was wrong and reported the case to police.
The Nicosia Economic Crime Investigation Unit is investigating.
The case is another reminder to be wary of loan offers advertised on social media, particularly when someone asks for money upfront. Before making any payment, borrowers should check that the lender is licensed and contact the company through independently verified details. A genuine loan is meant to provide money, not begin with a demand to hand over €10,000.
