Recent statistics show that 76% of domestic violence victims in Cyprus are women. In 2022, police received 2,614 reports from female victims, alongside 57 reported cases of rape. Maria Lottidi, Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights, shared these figures ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Lottidi noted that her office continues to investigate complaints related to workplace sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence, while monitoring the response of state authorities. The office also conducts training on these issues and intervenes to address sexist language in public discourse, including through participation in parliamentary discussions.
Data from both Cyprus and Europe show that eliminating gender-based violence requires ongoing, decisive, and coordinated efforts. In support of this goal, Lottidi announced a new awareness campaign, featuring a poster aimed at encouraging victims to speak out and reinforcing women as central to the pursuit of justice and the eradication of violence against them.
