Intense weather with rain, lightning and hail began at noon on Thursday (03/02) in various areas of Cyprus. As shown in the videos below, there was hail in Troodos, Paphos and Nicosia, while thunderstorms broke out in other parts of the island.

The Meteorological Service also issued a yellow warning for intense storms. In particular, isolated storms are expected to affect some areas from time to time. The amount of rain is expected to range between 35 and 50 millimeters per hour while hail is likely to fall. The warning is valid from 14:00 noon until 17:00 tomorrow afternoon.

Low pressure in the area will give way to dust in the atmosphere which will recede by tomorrow.

In the afternoon the weather will be mostly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms. Snow or sleet is expected in the higher mountains. The winds will be southwesterly, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and the sea will be slight to moderately turbulent.

Tonight the weather will remain mostly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly on the beaches, as well as snowfall in the higher mountains. The winds will be southwesterly to westerly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and the sea will be slight to moderately turbulent.

The temperature will drop to 5 degrees inland, about 8 degrees on the coast and zero in the higher mountains, where frost is expected.

Hail in Paphos.

Tomorrow the weather will be mostly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms as well as snowfall in the higher mountains. The rain will subside by late afternoon.

The winds will blow southwest to northwest, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and the sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will rise to around 14 degrees inland and on the coast, while in the higher mountains the temperature will be around 6 degrees.

The weather will be partly cloudy on Saturday and Sunday but expect more clouds on Sunday afternoon with rain and isolated thunderstorms. Snowfall is expected on the highest peaks of Troodos.

On Monday it will be partly cloudy as well with a slight drop in temperature.  Snow levels in Troodos Square at the time this bulletin was issued was 72 cm.
