Authorities in carried out a series of targeted inspections in mid-March to address unlawful passenger transport, resulting in fines totaling €8,250 and multiple violations being recorded.
The checks, conducted by the Department of Road Transport between March 16 and 22, focused on the districts of Nicosia and Larnaca. Officials say the initiative is part of an ongoing effort to curb illegal activity in the sector and improve safety for passengers.
In Nicosia, inspectors examined 120 taxis operating across urban, rural, and intercity routes. From these inspections, 14 vehicles were found to be in violation of regulations and were reported for various offenses.
Separate controls took place on March 20 at Larnaca Airport, where authorities specifically targeted private vehicles suspected of offering transport services. Out of eight vehicles inspected, evidence was gathered against two. As a result, three fines were issued, affecting two drivers and one company, adding up to €8,250.
Officials warn that illegal passenger transport often involves unlicensed drivers and vehicles lacking proper insurance, creating serious safety risks for passengers. In addition, such services may lead to unfair pricing practices.
The Department emphasized that enforcement actions will continue on a systematic and targeted basis. The goal is to ensure compliance with transport laws while safeguarding the public.
Members of the public are encouraged to choose licensed taxis that use taximeters and carry appropriate insurance. Authorities also advise against using private vehicles for paid transport and urge citizens to report any suspicious or illegal activity.
According to the Department, public cooperation remains essential in maintaining lawful operations and ensuring passenger safety.
