Nadia Calviño, the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), is set to make her first official visit to Cyprus on Friday, November 22, where she will open the new EIB Group office and hold talks with Cypriot leaders.
Calviño’s visit will include meetings with President Nikos Christodoulidis and Finance Minister Makis Keraynos to discuss key areas of cooperation aimed at enhancing economic resilience and fostering sustainable growth on the island.
The opening ceremony for the new EIB Group office will take place at the Ministry of Finance in Nicosia from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. President Christodoulidis will deliver the keynote address, while Minister Keraynos will offer a greeting. The new office is expected to bolster the EIB Group's presence in Cyprus, facilitating closer collaboration with local partners and businesses on strategic priorities and financing opportunities.
"The new office in Nicosia will strengthen the EIB’s local presence, making it easier to engage with Cypriot institutions and businesses, and support the country's economic priorities," a Ministry of Finance statement said.
During her visit, Calviño will also tour the University of Cyprus (UCY), where she will visit the university’s library and engineering school—both funded by the EIB. UCY Rector Tassos Christofides will accompany her on the tour.
The EIB’s ongoing initiatives in Cyprus include financing for the modernization of infrastructure, including water management, transportation, and energy projects. Looking ahead, the bank's focus will be on affordable housing and increasing access to finance for small businesses.
Since 1981, the EIB has invested a total of €5.6 billion in Cyprus, supporting projects that promote economic growth, social cohesion, and improved living standards. In 2023 alone, the bank invested €257 million in projects aimed at enhancing water management, regional development, and environmental sustainability, all while strengthening Cyprus's economic resilience.
Calviño’s visit underscores the EIB's continued commitment to supporting Cyprus's development and enhancing its economic partnerships within the European Union.
